Due to the obscene mass of blogs I had going for virtually the same thing, I am officially closing Biscuits n Taters as an upate center for Oxblood Press. Updates will be available through the Oxblood Press update page until the great day when I can afford a snazzy website with shiny links. It's just honestly too much for one luddite of a lady to handle

It's been pretty it's been fun but simplicity beckons. Biscuits n Taters will remain here as a n archive and li'l piece of oxblood history.

Early Summer Mid Summer Look Back Look Ahead

Although it's been some time now, Oxblood Press is still alive and well.

We've had some hard times this year already and a lot of solid plans went awry at the gun of unexpected events but we're rescheduling and getting ourselves back on track.

Here is a picture of a workstation from late April where some chicken portraits are finally taking shape. We have multiple other woodburnings in process (one in a beautiful frame of a mirror that was discared and we've reclaimed) as well as two story outlines for a few series. We will be hammering those over the next year so keep it in the back of your mind.

Woodburnings in drafting: think wolves, bears, scottish highlanders, rabbits, the city, the forest, the night sky and wonder.

Outside of that I've been a busy bee here on my pet project turned legit, The Madison Printmaking Cooperative! We are having our 6 month in our new space anniversary and celebrating with the launch of new classes! If you live in Madison, Come check us out.

I'll be moving my Kelsey Press and type drawers over there hopefully sometime this year to clean up and start some new postcards!

What I'm saying is, we've got lots of projects....LOTS.

Yes, we've been gone. Always gone. the Blogger is just...well a thorn.

Regardless, we are submitting to a more official and amazing Bike Winter Art Show 2011 which will be in partnership with the Chicago Urban Art Society in Das Pilsen of Chicago, IL USA. YES. Very glad it's movin' up. Instead of prints we're workin' on Scherenschnitte! No print access=new processes.

It's hard to draft for something you'll be cutting out but this is what we've got thus far...take a peak..Yeaaaap...a code of arms for Chiago's winter bicylclists. So the draft is one thing...a fricken paper cut out will be an entirely different thing, different feel and everything. I am SCARED. but new things...good?

And I've got some amazing chickens I've been working on for a friend's tattoo to share when they're closer to done.

Chickens on Scrap

My chicken assignment begins with heads. Sometimes I get it (below), sometimes I don't (reptilian above). Either way I'm treating them all the same. Drafting them on scrap birch plywood first, then I'll probably either paint them or woodburn them, depending on how i feel, maybe both.

Eventually I'll work my way up to a full chicken.

I sent this email to a former professor and colleague and feel it fits most perfectly as an update on my current happenings and possibles projects in process.

I had to opt out of the (farm)internship due to financial strains. But I work at a bakery for the summer and have the pleasure of being at Dane County's Farmer's Market every Saturday. Since being in Madison I've made connections with Tracy Hohn at UW's Silver Buckle Press and am talking with her about how we could form a new print cooperative for Madison. Everyone we meets seems excited at the prospect, so the interest is high, but we wonder who will commit at a more beneficial level. Currently it's talk and talking stock of interest, and now I'm trying to get her to get back to me about setting up a time and date to host a public meeting/info session in regards to it. Basically, we're waiting to take the idea public. It's hard when I mention to people back in Chicago that Madison has no real public printing space, they all think of the University's great resources and find it hard to believe there's nothing for the general public. There has been in the past, so they're ripe for a new one. It's a bit of a commitment but if it takes off, I may postpone graduate applications another year.

I am continuing to try and work my way in the art community here. Tracy at UW is an invaluable resource, throwing me at anyone I may be interested in speaking with. The kids at Mess Hall Press have been pretty nice and *hopefully* will pull through in helping me get my screen printing class proposal to the right people at Goodman Community Center, so I too, can teach a screen class through Mess Hall. I'm hoping to get into a printing workshop at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers come June and in the meantime am going to build my own exposing/light table so I can start screen printing out of my garage.

I recently entered my Prize pig etching from 2007 into a juried exhibition on Culture and Agriculture and hope I make it in. Granted I haven't much recent work, showing anything could be an improvement.

Looking at Graduate schools did put me in touch with an amazing grad student names Katie Ries at UT Knoxville. We have many cross-overs in our work and she encourages other people to redo many participation-based works she has done in their own towns. I've been interested in re-appropriating her Tour de Plants as a Tour de Meats for the Dane County region of Wisconsin. A way to examine the absence of local butchers in highly populated areas like Madison, and then look at where they still remain, and why that may be.

Also, if you find any old cookbooks with meat cut pages, cut them out and send them my way! I'm trying to collect more meat-pages from various cookbooks from across the years, intro and all, as a way to examine our society's relationship to meat throughout the years in a domestic setting. I've only got a few from my own old cookbooks at this time and could use more. I'm not sure what I'll do with them in the end, but it's a collection I'm serious about developing and using.

Other than that I work, just tilled up a 6'x15' plot for my first garden in Madison, and continue to tell myself to put together a second issue of FED.

It's a lot of work for someone with not a lot of time outside of work. But I make the list, make myself talk about doing these things, and know, I will as the lists are usually posted up on a bulletin board staring at me 'til productivity is awakened.

So there you have it. Tour de Meats, Meat Pages, and FED.

I am also making it top priority to start chicken drawings again and get to the zoo for a drawing day. Yay. When that will happen? May I imagine, this week is booked solid.

Making the decision to apply for an MFA program really makes you critical of your work. Critical in the context of how you want it to demonstrate your skill and ability to articulate visually, critical in the context of how you hope it functions as a springboard or an example of how you intend to get from here to there. Critical of just about everything. You find yourself questioning what fits what doesnt, what you still need, and then if what you think you still need is really what you still need or are you thinking you make work you dont make?

Confused? I sure as hell am. My head is a clatter of what I have done, what it says and what I think I need to start working on in order to say more. Dealing with my portfolio is complicated because I feel I have two very separate styles or bodies of work.

In one corner I can be witty, whimsical, colourful and playful. I can draw charming animals, often anthropormorphized, and sometimes not. I can draw quick little one-offs and make them look nice. I can print a poster, simple in technique, solid in message. In fact all of these are demonstrations of printmaking one of it's originally intended purpose, a way to distribute a message, in large scale.

In the other corner sits academia. A body of work that says what words can't, demonstrations of labour, laiden with meticulous detail, and every piece saturated with intent. Although often still playful, they do not often present themselves as such. Their colour palate is less complex, less catching. They are woodburnings etchings that take hours to produce, they are lithographs rendered simply, and they are letterpress pieces that speak with wit while handing over criticism. They are slick, and they are well produced, every edge handled with care.

I often stare at these two ranges of work and wonder what I'm doing. How the aesthetics fit and how I can possess what I see to be two polar opposites of working methods. And I wonder what I will do when portfolio time comes, because I'll have to choose won't I? I'll have to seem coherant and present a style, so it'll have to be one right?

Between these two visual bodies of work sits another body, the body that links the two, and that is a sea of text. This sea of text is my written word, my project machine, the stuff that informs the rest. It is research. From experiments in lard, to introspection on a collection of magazine cut-outs, to explorations in culinary traditions links to personal heritage, to a critical look and potato biodiversity and the effects of monoculture, all of it---it is research and it is what makes these two avenues make sense.

Or so I hope.

It is my belief working in all aspects of printmaking is important; the print maker utilizing every possible function or purpose of their medium. I should be able to recognize the historical significance in using it for something as simple as a poster, wheatpasted for free or making zines. I distribute information produced at my hand and at my expense.

As an artist I am interested in process and message. As an activist I am interested in distribution of message. As an agrarian I am interested in land and it's creatures.

As a printer, I can make all of that work. But I can do it two ways and I can reach two separate audiences.

Hopefully urban agrarian artist activist is a desirable ploy for graduate school.

bike winter art show update, print co-ops?, culture and agriculture submission

pushing deadlines again. i have just received one of the most professionally blown out screens to date while simultaneously writing out a budget to build a light table for the home for summer printing. seems like it's the best option. regardless, the film worked out fine, all the fine lines took and i can't wait to lay it down on the wood and start fillin her in. upon going to the lumberyard today, with a small amount in my pocketbook, i was unable to purchase the wood i need and will have to get it tomorrow morning instead. however, Steven has been kind enough to let me throw it up the day of the single showing, instead of mail it, essentially giving me an extension unknowingly. huzzah.

i will say this is an absurd amount of work for a such a small amount of actual showing time. but it has put me back into working mode, which is a good thing.

which leads me to the next topic of discussion, i currently am in cahoots with a lovely lady faculty member from UW Madison to start stirring a print co-op pots here in Madison. frustrated by the lack of public access printing facilities (particularly letterpress and screen), i posted to Briar Press about wanting to start my own collaborative. by some great online networking magic, her colleague in Alabama forwarded her my post and thus put her in contact with me.

she is an invaluable resource, full of information in regards the history of print co-ops in madison as well as a great connection to the art community (both within academia and out). and most of all, she is pleasant, and equally as excited about this idea.

we have a few more brainstorming meetings with an April public meeting goal in mind.

a last topic of note, in regards to being put back into work mode, i'm trying to get my ass in gear and work on a piece or two to enter into a juried exhibition. although my aesthetic probably won't match theirs, the 24th Annual Culture and Agriculture Exhibit is just around the corner. with little over a month to throw something together, i still intend to try. good practice. and shit, if i get in, all the better. if not, there is next year, when i'll definitely have work from this summer to enter.

Meat Print Exchange

Well, it's basically done, minus the directions I have to print on the backs. The recipe cards didn't work out as my registration was a fail.

Good enough though, considering they're meant to be cut out and mailed! I have a feeling my print may be one of few that don't actually depicts chunks of meat. Funny how when you work with meat, you think about discussing it differently. I'm more interested in people looking at animals, in this case cute fuzzy ones, that you also can eat.

They're also all delicious.

It's a mess. My current space isn't conducive to home printing and I've managed to do a botched registration job. Doing the next two colours will be a pain and surely, I can kiss the post card outline on back goodbye as I haven't a clue how I can assure myself they line up with the pink flats in front, especially with this failure in registration keys.

`Alas, hand-pulled luster. Flats always look so lush, makes me dread the outlines that follow.

On the subject of awesome sausage art, one cannot overlook Deiter Roth and Literaturwurst. Got to love those Germans. Suppose I should've mentioned that as an influence, but I plum forgot. This is what Wiki has to say about it:

Literaturwurst (Literature Sausage) is an Artist's book made by the Swiss-German artist Deiter Roth between 1961 and 1974. Each book was made using traditional sausage recipes, but replacing the sausage meat with a book or magazine. After a rather long, and confusing/upsetting/frustrating day at work, I was happy to come home to a package in the mail. A package I didn't expect, and chock full of goodness from Wisconsin.

In return for sending off the first copy of my zine to the Madison Infoshop, they sent me a bunch of zines! Some I'm rather familiar with, the Defender and the Cultivator but there were a bunch of new ones I'll enjoy taking a gander at.

Exchanging information in such a fashion makes my heart happy.

And after today it really means a lot, a simple gift exchange demonstrating what we are still capable of as people.

Two weeks ago I went out to Berkeley for a lecture on the Art of Butcher.
the size of this pine cone fascinated me, as i've never seen them so big.

i wrote some sort of thing about my position in the food world in the midwest vs. the west. and also just sort of some commentary on berkeley. so i'll post that later this week as it's on my laptop -and- once my flickr let's me upload in a week, i'll link to the photos from berkeley, not just the lecture.

a summary of all that will be as follows:
the colours were as vibrant as they came across my lense and the air was as rich as a ganache raining over a dense black forest cake.

i can be quoted as saying this upon my return to chicago,
"it smelled like the conservatory on west lake street! but it was REAL!"

and these oranges reminded me of someone in addition to providing nutrients.

.obsessive clean up leaves you without the heavy line you had to begin with, so be prepared
.having more than a week and a half is better

How many licks?

(update on the deer on a p-farth)

I got three colours laid on my piece for the show next week. That means, there is only ONE left--which I'll have to ask my boss to print out so I can get a saturated film, my other films were sort of half-assed---a bit of luck in the wash out room.

I was impressed at my ability to scavange for wood in my apartment's attic; and impressed at my ability to sand off tons of filth and plaster to reveal a relatively decent piece of material; and impressed at how i managed to rocket through this sanding and staining in two nights while managing to lock myself out of my apartment for a few hours...

despite all this my carpenter skills still sort of suck balls and i forgot to notice before i printed the first colour.

the printed side was the side previously covered with plaster because it had less 'dings' in it that the other side. but, i sort of didn't properly sand that side. i sort of...went all over the place. which you can see. you totally can see that shit. the stain ate it up.

oh who cares.
my colours from almost *gasp* 3 years ago, still are lovely.

3 colours down. 1 to go. and a sealant.

i forgot to put it back. good thing its just a rough scan.
now i have to draw up the background and do some illustrator/photoshop magic.
and then, pray that it prints well of the wood i buy.
